How's Your Speech?
How's Your Speech?
I am seeing a continuing decline in personal standards. This has to do with the everyday language I hear when I am out and about and what I hear in the media these days. Watching movies and watching some television shows on subscription services brings it front and center to excess. The “F-word” is becoming very prominent in people’s daily speech. In some of these television shows and movies, the “F-word” is used so much, it is a rare sentence that does not include the word. Those producing those shows tell us they are making it like the “real world”. That comment in and of itself is a sad comment on how they perceive reality. If that is what the real world is like, then we are not as intelligent as we would like people to think we are.
Much of this bad language people are using at home to excess. The same people using the word so much at home either tell their children to not say the word or actually laugh about it when their children repeat what they hear Mom and Dad say at home. I think this shows a lack of respect for other people and shows a lesser level of social intelligence.
I want people to find my conversation at a higher level than that. I also think this growing trend is reflective of how our education system is not spending enough time on language, words, and English. Our education system is spending too much time on social issues and social equity and not enough time on usable knowledge.
What is very frustrating is that I can’t really impact this negativity. I can make sure I don’t use the “F-word” in my language but it’s not like I can vote against it and make it against the law. It is another sign of the decline in our educational system and our society as a whole. Surely, we can do better than this.
