Are the Dallas Cowboys "All In"?

 March 14, 2024- Saturday

Jerry Jones, Owner and General Manager of the Dallas Cowboys, made a statement after the Cowboys lost in the first round of the playoffs this past January. He said the Cowboys were all in to do whatever it took to win a Super Bowl.

Since the day Jones made that statement, the Dallas Cowboys have seen the following players leave:

  • Tony Pollard, starting running back

  • Dorance Armstrong, defensive lineman

  • Tyler Biadasz, starting offensive center

  • Tyron Smith, starting offensive tackle

  • Michael Gallops, often injured wide receiver

  • Neville Gallimore, defensive lineman

  • Dante Fowler, defensive lineman

  •

The Dallas Cowboys have added the following players or resigned players on the roster:

  • Erik Kendrick, soon to be starting middle linebacker

  • C.J. Goodwin, special teams player

  • Jourdan Lewis, starting defensive back

So, the question must be asked, “Are the Dallas Cowboys a better team now than the team that lost in the first round of the playoffs this past season?” The simple answer is a definitive, “No.”

The next question that begs to be asked is, “Does it really matter?” The answer to that one is a definitive, “No,” also. Adding Erik Kendrick will stabilize the middle of the defense, but Kendrick is one the downside of his career and will not be a game changing player on defense. Trayvon Diggs will be back in his cornerback position following his season ending injury last year. The Dallas Cowboys also have only four picks in the first four rounds of the upcoming draft. Drafting low in the draft promises to provide a limited number of new players. I guess we should look at the statement, “All in to win a Super Bowl,” and determine what that really means to Jerry Jones.

The Dallas Cowboys in their current configuration cannot win a Super Bowl. They have proven that over the past three years, not to mention the previous thirty years. This team must fundamentally change. The owner and general manager must realize, this team must be turned over as if starting from scratch. The Dallas Cowboys are a mediocre team with mediocre players and a mediocre general manager.

Last year’s version of the Dallas Cowboys technically defeated two teams with winning records. One was the Philadelphia Eagles when the Eagles were in their own midseason freefall. The second win came over the Detroit Lions which came at the hands of an incompetent referee’s call at the end of the game. The Cowboys did not really beat a good team last year. They are not going to beat a good team in 2024 either.

There are not enough available players on the free agent market to improve this team. There is not another quarterback that can be bought who can read a defense to make this team better. This team is deficient at all positions except for defensive end, Micah Parsons, cornerback Trayvon Diggs, offensive lineman Zack Martin, tight end Jake Fergson, punter Bryan Anger, kicker Brandon Aubrey, defensive back Jourdan Lewis and wide receiver Cee Dee Lamb.

The team is full of good players but not enough outstanding players to make a difference in their won and loss record. This team will change one way or the other. The good players' contracts will end, and they will move on, or the good players will be traded for high draft picks. That is the only chance this team has to become better, and it will take time, lots of time, assuming the players chosen are better than the ones on the team now.
