The Dallas Mavericks- Not a Snowball's Chance

June 16, 2024- Saturday

The Boston Celtics lead the Dallas Mavericks three games to one in the National Basketball Association’s championship series. None of the games have been close games. In the first three games, Boston dominated in all areas of the game as the season long statistics would say they would. Then came the elimination game four.

Dallas showed up ready to play and Boston did not. Contrary to all the season-long statistics, Dallas dominated in all areas of the game. The Mavericks won by 38 points and felt good about their performance. They weren’t embarrassed. They were in the previous three games. Now comes Game 5.

Dallas travels to Boston on Monday in another elimination game. Can Dallas repeat Game Four? I don’t think so. There is a psychology that goes along with sports, and I think we will see that on display tomorrow night. The Boston Celtics fans will be there in full throat. The Celtics players know they are the athletically superior team on the floor. They led the league in three-point percentages for the entire year and built a series lead on the strength of three-point shots and athletic advantage. Even at the professional level, it is hard to maintain the psychological edge that is required over an extended period of time.

The psychology of the game will be on display Monday night. The fervor of the home court will mix with the athletic ability of the Boston players. The Celtics players know they have an advantage in all areas of the game, and they will be on their home floor.

The Dallas Mavericks will be able to go home knowing they had an extremely good year and were able to get an added measure of national attention. The Mavericks will know they are still a couple of solid bench players away from having the team that can win the NBA Championship. It just isn’t going to happen Monday night.
