Continuing to Decrease the Noise

Topic of the Day- In this noisy world, we have to work hard to hear ourselves. How will you do the work?

This is much easier to do in a retired world than in a busy work world. I remember my workdays beginning around 7:30 a.m. and each day gradually got faster and faster as each hour passed. There was very little time away from all the noise. It is easier to control being retired.

Much of today’s noise is media induced and that can be controlled. For someone who has been interested in news, you must be disciplined to turn it off. Many people are uncomfortable turning off the noise because our daily noise is so persistent and so loud. The persistent news can easily cause anxiety and stress. I think we need to come to the point where we accept, we don’t need the constant noise.

Once we accept that, we can then decide what level of noise we can effectively manage. I have found I do have a saturation point. I am actively, consciously turning off my media noise and switching to physical work, music or pleasure reading. I think I’m doing better controlling the daily noise.

The other thing I am actively working to find is audible quiet. Not metaphorical but actual quiet. No music or media awhile walking or driving. Actively finding places away from the sound of traffic, sirens or airplanes. I find that level of quiet to be real and comforting. It can also induce some low-level anxiety because it is such a dramatic change from where we all live our lives. That is a positive anxiety which can provide a better level of peace.
