The T.V. Ratings College Football Playoffs

December 4, 2023- Monday

The austere College Football Playoff committee made their end of the season selections for the college football playoffs for 2023.  Michigan, Washington, Texas, and Alabama were selected to fight it out to see who gets the great trophy for 2023.  It's a great group for television ratings.  No Texas Christian University in the mix like last year.

Florida State University played their schedule and won all of their games.  They have a perfect record.  They were not included in the final four teams selected.  Why?  Those who made the decision are saying they are not the team they were before they lost their starting quarterback to injury and that is why they were not selected.  It doesn't matter the team won multiple games without the starting quarterback, including the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship game.

The committee then selected the University of Alabama to be in final four instead of Florida State.  But wait.  Let's look at the conferences represented.  Michigan is from the Big Ten.  Washington is from the soon to be defunct Pac 12.  Texas is from the Big 12.  Alabama is from the SEC and there is the rub.  If the committee had kept the deserving Florida State, that would have meant no SEC in the college playoff bracket and that was not going to be allowed.  Those who have a voice in college football universally believe the SEC is the best conference in college football.  How can there not be an SEC team in the college playoffs?  There could have been.  Since Georgia lost on the last game of the season, they should have been ranked fourth.  The committee did not want to leave Georgia in the playoffs since they lost to Alabama who gets big television ratings.  Since Texas had previously beaten Alabama early in the season, the committee could not place Alabama into the playoffs without putting Texas in the playoffs, so Florida State and Georgia get eliminated.

We need to understand the college playoff football process is rigged from the beginning.  This year's selection process is pure evidence.  Florida State gets to pay the price for not having as large of a television presence as Alabama does.  I recommend we rename the college football championship the College Football Television Ratings Championship.  That is what is this all about anyway.
