Create, Appreciate, Respect

Topic of the Day- Create, Appreciate, Respect

Too many times, the word create is isolated to the world of fine arts. Some of us like to create change when there are situations we think need to be improved. I never really saw myself as a creative person but there is one situation in my professional life where I used my critical thinking skills to create positive environments.

Because of working in hospitals, I really believe part of my calling professionally was to create positive work environments for people. Doing this prevented work from being a stressor for the staff. The staff provided better patient care because of the positive environment as evidenced by consistently high patient satisfaction survey and low employee turnover.

Besides making sure patients received great care, I was also there to help the staff. I know my work and approach to work was appreciated. I was told this by patients and staff many times. It was that appreciation that gave me fuel to continue the next day. Appreciation was like adrenaline to me.

Over time, I know I gained a high level of respect from both those in the medical field but the IT field also. I achieved this respect because I worked diligently to learn and effectively apply what I learned. I think I earned this respect because I gave respect first. I have operated from the position that everyone deserves respect first. For me, a person would need to do multiple things to decrease my respect. I know I needed to earn other’s respect, but I chose to give respect first. I may have been somewhat naive, but this approach served me well through my professional and personal lives.
