What is Home?

Topic of the Day: To Appreciate a place fully, a man must know that he can live there. Wherever you are, give the place the justice it deserves. Where are you now?

I have made five places my physical home in life. Even at my present age, I could still make other locations in this world my physical home, but those locations are not as important as the people where those locations are. Where my wife is, that is home. We can travel to where our family is, but it is the intimate relationships that are what makes a location home. That thought is no great revelation to anyone.

Purpose in a location is also vitally important. To have a totally self-indulgent existence is the height of selfishness and neurotic in the least. Individually focused will not result in a productive home. My home has not changed location, but the purpose has changed and through the changes in purposes, the roots embedded in our home have only grown deeper. Time can accomplish that, but more and greater purposes can deepen the feeling of home also. Sometimes the greater purpose is not necessarily pleasant or easy, but it still deepens the feeling of home.

I am still preparing for the last twenty years of my life and working on my continuing purpose. My purpose has moved from my professional purpose to one more focused on family purposes. Although this purpose has always been in place, it has migrated to other roles. These roles may actually be my final roles. Home is a place. Home is purpose. Home is people.
